An Illustrated Japan
This Privacy Policy explains how An Illustrated Japan
(the “App”, application identifier com.mizuky.explorejapan)
handles information when you use it. We have designed the App to collect as little
personal data as possible. You are never asked to sign up, and never asked for your
name, email address, or phone number.
The App does, however, keep a player record on our servers. It is created for you automatically, it holds the backup of your save, and it is what the profile and friends features are built on. Sections 2 and 3 set out exactly what it holds.
By using the App, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please discontinue use of the App.
We do not ask for or directly collect personally identifiable information such as your name, email address, postal address, or phone number. There is no signup form and no login to complete: your player record is created for you and is identified by a randomly generated account ID, not by anything about you.
If you choose to use Apple Game Center or Google Play Games, those services authenticate you under their own privacy policies. Any display name you type into your profile is one you choose yourself, and does not have to be your real name.
Your game progress and preferences are stored on your device and backed up to our servers, which is what Device Transfer moves to a new device. The backup runs only where you have consented to it, and only the following are uploaded:
We keep one save per player and no history: each upload replaces the last, so there is no earlier state to go back to.
So that the save can be yours and the social features can work, we keep a player record containing:
Your display name, avatar, account ID and island are shown to other players you are connected to. Please do not put anything in your display name that you would not want another player to see.
If you report another player, we keep the report and what you wrote in it.
We record an IP address in two narrow places only — when a device transfer is claimed or completed, and on the sensitive account operations behind it — and we use it to detect abuse of those operations. We do not log your IP address for ordinary play.
The App uses the following third-party services, which may collect data in accordance with their own privacy policies. We do not control how these providers process data.
| Service | Purpose | Data it may process |
|---|---|---|
| Appodeal (ad mediation) | Delivering optional rewarded video ads by running a real-time auction across multiple advertising networks | Advertising identifier (IDFA/IDFV), IP address, device and network information (device type, operating system, mobile carrier), and ad interaction data such as impressions and clicks |
| Google AdMob | Showing optional rewarded video ads (e.g. for free coins or extra time), served directly or through Appodeal mediation | Advertising identifier (IDFA/GAID), device & app information, approximate activity used for ad delivery and measurement |
| Google Firebase Analytics | Understanding how the App is used so we can improve it | Aggregated, non-identifying usage and device data (e.g. screen views, events such as stage clears and purchases) |
| Google Firebase Crashlytics | Diagnosing crashes and stability issues | Crash logs, device model, OS version, diagnostic state at time of crash |
| Meta (Facebook) App Events | Measuring how well our advertising performs, by reporting a small number of in-game events such as reaching a level or completing a purchase | Advertising and device identifiers, device and app information, and the event itself (for example “level achieved” or a purchase confirmation) |
| Apple Game Center / Google Play Games | Optional sign-in to the platform gaming service | Your platform gaming identity and whatever that service associates with it, under Apple’s or Google’s own policy |
| Apple App Store / Google Play Billing | Processing in-app purchases (Diamond packs) | Purchase transactions are processed by Apple or Google. We receive a transaction confirmation but not your payment-card details |
Provider privacy policies:
Ads in the App are optional and rewarded — you choose to watch them. Advertising partners may use a device advertising identifier to deliver and measure ads. You can limit or reset this identifier at any time:
Ads are delivered through a mediation platform that runs an auction across several advertising networks, so the network serving a given ad may vary.
The App offers optional in-app purchases (Diamond packs). Payments are handled entirely by the Apple App Store or Google Play. We do not receive or store your credit-card or billing information. Purchases unlock in-app currency only and confer no real-world value.
The App is a general-audience puzzle game and is not directed at children under the age required by your local law for consent (for example, under 13 in the United States). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information, please contact us so we can address it.
Game data stored on your device is retained until you delete it or uninstall the App. Your player record and its save are kept on our servers until you ask us to delete them. Deleting the App does not delete them: it removes your device’s key to the record, so the App starts a new one next time, but the old record remains with us until we are asked to erase it. Data processed by third-party services is retained according to those providers’ policies.
Depending on where you live (e.g. under the GDPR or CCPA), you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal data, or to object to certain processing.
For the player record and save described in sections 2 and 3, those requests come to us, at the address in section 11. Please include your 9-digit account ID, which you can read off your profile in the App — it is the only way we can identify your record. Requests about the data held by the advertising, analytics and platform providers in section 4 should be directed to those providers, since we do not control what they hold.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above. Continued use of the App after a change constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
