About this place

Hotoke-ga-Ura is 2 km of white-green tuff cliffs up to 90 m on the west coast of Shimokita Peninsula, Sai Village. Formed as Green Tuff 20–12 Ma from submarine volcanism, uplifted and then carved by Tsugaru Strait's fierce waves and blizzards into Buddhist-looking stacks: Nyorai-no-kubi, Gohyaku-Rakan, Hitotsu-Hotoke, Juzo-Butsu Kannon-iwa, Jizo-do—hence the name Hotoke-ga-Ura / Hotoke-Uta (Buddha's Shore). Contrast of green trees, indigo sea, ivory rock feels like Pure Land. Legend ties it to Minamoto no Yoritomo enshrining Lotus Sutra for pacifying Ezo. Access 45 min drive from Oma, then steep stairs 15 min down from parking. Best 2h around low tide; boat view available in season. Tuff is fragile—no climbing, no sampling, pack out trash. Photo: low tide, wide-angle of Gohyaku-Rakan, afternoon side-light brings out greenish-white. The site shifts clearly across seasons. Late May to June brings fresh green and soft light, summer offers cool highland wind, autumn burns with broadleaf color, winter sharpens the landform with snow. Choose a 1h stroll or half-day traverse; morning front-light is best for photos, but backlight sunset also works for silhouettes. Access is by JR plus local bus and a short walk; parking is limited so arrive early or use public transport. Local foods—miso-based dishes, mountain vegetables, lake fish, lamb—pair well with a nearby onsen or roadside station stop. Etiquette matters: don't step on moss or move driftwood, keep tripods compact, keep distance from nesting birds, carry out trash. With that context the landscape reads not as just pretty nature but as geology and living culture intertwined.
