About this place

The Takigyō waterfall austerity and Shakyō sutra-copying experience at Hōchi-in Temple takes place at Kiyomizu Kannon Hōchi-in, a historic Tendai temple founded in 803 in Ogi City, later revived by first Saga lord Nabeshima Katsushige in the Edo period. Beside the temple precinct lies Kiyomizu Falls, 75 m high, 13 m wide, also called Tama-sudare Falls for its curtain-like flow, constituting a natural sacred site. The program invites beginners to don white work wear and enter the basin to practice takigyō, a form of misogi purification where the icy stream massages the body, clearing mental stagnation. After the waterfall, participants move to a quiet hall encompassed by bamboo for shakyō, slowly tracing the Heart Sutra with brush and ink, focusing on breathing and posture, under monk guidance. The fused practice lasts about an hour and resonates with overseas visitors seeking deep Japanese spirituality and mindfulness retreats. Ends with tea and the option of dedicating copied sutra or taking it home. With Edo-period Benzaiten Hall and the cliff-top Kannon Hall, the approach conveys a time-slip atmosphere and offers sweeping views of Saga Plain, combining nature worship with Buddhist practice in a single location.
