About this place

天空のポピー畑 in 埼玉県 is Patchwork Hills formed on volcanic ash soil, where crop rotation creates quilt of wheat gold, potato white, beet dark green, bean pale green. Developed after war, symbolized by Biei Station building since 1952 still used. Famous tree planted as farm boundary marker became icon after 1972 Nissan Skyline ‘Ken & Mary’ TV ad – a single about 100-year-old poplar. Tourists arrive by rental e-bike, as hills are rolling with long climbs. No highest mountain, but Seven Stars Tree and Parent-Child Trees also known. Visit in early morning before tour buses crowd and side-shops sell soft-serve. Respect that these are working fields, not park – stay on roads. The site shifts clearly across seasons. Late May to June brings fresh green and soft light, summer offers cool highland wind, autumn burns with broadleaf color, winter sharpens the landform with snow. Choose a 1h stroll or half-day traverse; morning front-light is best for photos, but backlight sunset also works for silhouettes. Access is by JR plus local bus and a short walk; parking is limited so arrive early or use public transport. Local foods—miso-based dishes, mountain vegetables, lake fish, lamb—pair well with a nearby onsen or roadside station stop. Etiquette matters: don't step on moss or move driftwood, keep tripods compact, keep distance from nesting birds, carry out trash. With that context the landscape reads not as just pretty nature but as geology and living culture intertwined.
