About this place

Hakuto Coast is a one-kilometer white sand bow-shaped beach in Hakuto district, Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture, stage for the Hare of Inaba myth recorded in Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, considered Japan's first love story. The legend tells of a white hare losing fur to wani sharks while attempting to cross from Oki Island to main island, crying on beach until Okuninushi no Kami taught healing with fresh water and cattail pollen, leading hare to arrange marriage between Okuninushi and Princess Yagami. Oki Island 400 meters offshore is said to be hare's starting point. Sand is quartz derived from granite ground by wave abrasion producing white color unusual for Sea of Japan. Coastal dune vegetation includes Rosa rugosa and Calystegia soldanella, conserved within San'in Kaigan National Park white pine and sand management. Evening sunlight silhouettes Oki Island forming popular photo point. Hakuto Shrine nearby specializes in matchmaking, skin disease healing, animal protection, with myriad hare stone statues offered by devotees, and Mitashima approach behind torii for tidal purification. Michi-no-Eki Shinwa no Sato Shirousagi hosts hot spring and legend museum. Access: 40 minutes from Tottori Station by Hinomaru Bus to Hakuto Jinja-mae, 5 minutes walk to beach, or 20 minutes drive from Tottori Sand Dunes. Observation deck at Hakuto Hill features stone circles mapping mythical journey and parking area of San'in Expressway allows rest-stop viewing. Summer swimming beach draws families with gentle waves in inside reef zone. Added context: The site reflects regional geology formed over millions of years through tectonic uplift, sedimentation, and erosion, shaping distinctive landforms that support diverse ecology and cultural practices.
