About this place

The Uradome Coast stretches 15 kilometers in Iwami Town, Tottori Prefecture, forming the central sector of San'in Kaigan National Park within the UNESCO Global Geopark San'in Kaigan Geopark. Designated a core geosite, the coast is a ria coastline carved by Sea of Japan wave erosion into Cretaceous granite about 80 million years old, later uplifted and reshaped by sea-level change about two million years ago, producing white sandy beaches interspersed with islands, sea caves, and gateway rocks. Seawater transparency ranks among Japan's clearest with visibility 15 meters in summer. Uradome pleasure cruise operates 40 minutes circling islands Nato-Goshima, Johara Beach, Sengan Matsushima pine-clad granite islet, Kamogatari Coast, and Ajirigasaki, observing blue cave grottoes and columnar jointing. Sengan Matsushima is covered by pine resilient to salt wind; Kamogatari natural causeway emerges at low tide allowing foot crossing, beloved by photographers. The hinterland includes Iwami ancient tomb clusters from 2,000 years ago and Iwai Onsen. Geology field guides identify dikes and xenoliths in granite. Access: seven minutes from Iwami Station on San'in Main Line by Hinomaru Bus to Uradome Kaigan-guchi, or twenty minutes walk to beach. Activities include swimming at Uradome Beach, snorkeling, SUP, kayaking, and observing ikari fishing boat lights at dusk during summer. Winter sees Sea of Japan high waves crashing into cliffs, producing dynamic scenery contrasting calm summer scenes. Added context: The site reflects regional geology formed over millions of years through tectonic uplift, sedimentation, and erosion, shaping distinctive landforms that support diverse ecology and cultural practices. Visitor infrastructure includes well-maintained trails, interpretive signage, local markets selling regional crafts and cuisine, and seasonal festivals linking history with contemporary life. Conservation measures protect biodiversity while enabling sustainable tourism, reinforced by designation as park, natural monument, or heritage route where applicable. Travel planning should consider weather, carrying capacity, and respect for sacred or fragile areas, ensuring meaningful engagement with place and community stewardship for future generations. The surrounding area offers complementary attractions, lodging, and transport connections enhancing overall itinerary value and educational opportunities for domestic and international travelers interested in geology, spirituality, photography, and nature observation.
