About this place

Yanagawa Canal Cruise, known as Yanagawa no Kawakudari, is the defining experience of Yanagawa City, the Water Town, about one hour by car from central Fukuoka or 50 minutes by Nishitetsu limited express from Tenjin to Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station. The city is built around Yanagawa Castle, and its horibori moat network, originally engineered in the Sengoku period to flood for defense and later used for irrigation, fire prevention, and daily water, now extends with more than 930 meters of inner channels in the sightseeing zone and roughly 60 kilometers citywide forming a grid over two square kilometers. Riding donko-bune, flat-bottomed wooden boats named for their resemblance to the small donko goby, visitors drift about four kilometers in 60 to 70 minutes while a boatman poles with a single bamboo shaft and sings tourist songs and a Hakushu nursery rhyme. The name donko references local fish shape. Four boarding areas lie five to ten minutes walk from Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station, run by five companies with around 200 boats in total, 24 passengers per boat, adult fare 1500 yen, no reservation for shared boats, group charters recommended to book ahead. Standard inner moat route runs from Ohana, the Tachibana clan villa, to Okibata entertainment quarter, passing weeping willows, stone walls of former samurai residences, Namikura earthen storehouse built in Meiji, and seasonal scenery. Spring brings weeping cherry and peach blossom, early summer displays about 30,000 irises at Okishima Shobu-en and Tachibana Ikoi no Mori, summer evening offers official Akari-bune illumination cruises July to September, 70 minutes by chartered boat with lantern light reflecting on water, autumn colors red, winter features kotatsu-bune with a traditional charcoal brazier and table under a futon, serving amazake while snow settles as a painting. The tour became a sightseeing product after 1953, inspired by the 1954 film Karatachi no Hana based on poet Kitahara Hakushu, a native of Yanagawa, who was born there. Initially two boats were floated for visitors, now about 300,000 ride yearly. Guides point out Hakushu stone monuments and bronze statues along banks. Boats have free seating, are open air, you can bring drinks and a bento, and two waterborne stalls mid-route sell juice, sake, and ice cream if you call the boatman. The trip ends at Okibata, lined with restaurants famous for unagi no seiro-mushi, steamed eel in bamboo steamer, and local shops selling pickles. At weekends you may encounter hanayome-bune wedding boats, about 100 couples a year, being clapped by passing boats. Practical notes include boarding main points like Shogetsu and Kyotei-mae, wearing hat in summer, blanket in winter, and pre-purchasing a combination ticket with Ohana garden. International visitors appreciate the quiet slowness, the sound of pole splashing, and the chance to photograph low water gates where you must duck. Yanagawa remains living heritage heritage water management, preserved by dredging and community cleaning, and remains listed by Fukuoka's official tourism site Crossroad Fukuoka.
