About this place

Mt Kaimon 924m dominates Satsuma Peninsula tip in Ibusuki, double cone active volcano last eruption 885. Nicknamed Satsuma Fuji among Japan 100 Mountains though under 1000m. Worshipped as deity of Hirakiki Shrine guarding sea fishing. Fureai Park trail 5km three hours spiral climb requires hiking shoes. Summit offers 360 panorama north to Kirishima Sakurajima Lake Ikeda south to Yakushima Mishima islands. History sees Ryukyu envoys celebrating sight, monk Jianzhen drifting after five voyages, kamikaze pilots final homeland view. Unique symbol of Kagoshima.
