About this place

Kirishima Mountain Range is a volcanic group consisting of more than twenty volcanoes straddling the border of Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, forming the core of Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park established as one of Japan's first national parks. Its highest peak is Karakuni-dake at 1,700 meters, the fourth highest in mainland Kyushu, stretching roughly twenty-two kilometers north to south and eight kilometers east to west, actively monitored due to persistent volcanic activity: in 2022, Iwo-yama Ioyama erupted with ongoing fumarolic activity. From Karakuni summit, a three hundred sixty degree panorama unfolds revealing Sakurajima, Kinko Bay, Takachiho-no-Mine, and on clear days even distant Yakushima. Takachiho-no-Mine at 1,573 meters enshrines the legendary descent of Ninigi-no-Mikoto, grandson of Sun Goddess Amaterasu, described in Kojiki and Nihon Shoki chronicles, with the spear Amano-Sakahoko stuck into the summit as a spiritual marker and object of mountain worship. The natural highlight is Onami-ike Crater Lake at 1,411 meters elevation, recognized as Japan's highest crater lake among all bowl-shaped volcanic crater lakes, formed approximately forty thousand years ago, measuring six hundred thirty meters in diameter and eleven meters deep, displaying cobalt blue surface contrasted against surrounding forests with mysterious clarity. Onami is selected among Japan's one hundred famous mountains' circuits and Japan's top one hundred geological sites, accessible via fifteen minutes bus from Ebino Ecomuseum Center to Onami-ike Trailhead then forty minutes hike to lakeside, where fresh air and silence dominate. At the foothills stands Kirishima Jingu Shrine, enshrining Ninigi as main deity, one of largest shrines in southern Kyushu with vermillion lacquered halls framed by giant Kirishima cedar, enshrouded in sacred atmosphere. The area also hosts Kirishima Onsen-kyo hot spring villages with over eight hundred years of history, abundant sulfuric milky waters prized by bathers. Because Kirishima counts multiple peaks within Japan's One Hundred Famous Mountains, seasonal color transitions including Miyama Kirishima azalea blooms in late May painting slopes pink, and autumn foliage transforming mountainsides, attract hikers year-round; the fourth Sunday in April holds the bright leaves forestry opening festival for broadleaf evergreen forests. Cultivated in geothermal heat, the range collectively draws geologists, pilgrims, and recreationists alike seeking active earth interaction. Travelers spending an evening in Miyazaki often pair this dish with local hospitality, learning how staff explain ingredient provenance and charcoal technique in simple English with picture menus, making it approachable for first-time visitors seeking authentic regional flavors beyond Tokyo, while local regulars share recommendations for next stops.
