Kusasenrigahama is a vast 785,000 sqm double crater grassland product of dacitic pumice eruption 30,000 years ago at 1,100-1,140m on Eboshi-dake northern foot, central core of Aso-Kuju National Park and designated National Scenic Natural Monument including 米塚. Total designated area 1,258,508 sqm. Its shallow basin holds two rain-fed ponds acting as watering holes for horses, reflecting sky and grass on calm days. Backdropped by smoking Nakadake, the pastoral scene with grazing horses and牛 evokes poets like Tatsuji Miyoshi's 'Kusa-Senri' anthology and school textbook familiarity. Currently 12 leisure horses used for daytime riding are released evening to early morning for grazing under common pasture association rights; after 2010 foot-and-mouth disease outbreak cattle grazing ceased, and to prevent disease and kick injuries visitors must view from over 30m away, yet SNS misinformation 'pet the horses' causes sporadic incidents. Horseback riding experiences, seasonal fresh green, silver grass, snow scenery, and Aso Volcano Museum 10-min walk complete the highland experience.
