About this place

Miyazaki Prefecture has emerged as Japan's surf capital, beloved by international surfers for its relaxed surf-town lifestyle and year-round ridable waves centered on Kisakihama and Aoshima beaches. Facing the Pacific Ocean and influenced by the Kuroshio Current, the coastline receives consistent swells that create a succession of beach breaks and point breaks along a stretch stretching more than twelve kilometers, catering to novices seeking their first green waves and seasoned professionals testing skills against powerful surf. Aoshima Beach, set against the mystical Aoshima Island and its shrine, offers a crescent-shaped beach with approachable, consistent waves, ample parking, and immediate access to local shops and eateries, making it ideal for families and beginners. One iconic sight is local surfers riding bicycles with surfboards mounted sideways, a laid-back image that encapsulates Miyazaki's surf culture and appears in global travel features. Kisakihama Beach, in contrast, is known for its broad sandy shores and challenging, powerful waves that provide an adrenaline-pumping experience for advanced surfers, hosting the annual Kisakihama Surfing Contest and having served as a venue for the ISA World Surfing Games in September 2019, which doubled as a qualifier for the Tokyo Olympics. That event, drawing competitors and spectators from across Japan and beyond, instilled pride and demonstrated that Japanese waves could compete on the world stage, ingraining a deep-seated surf culture that continues to define the region. Today the legacy is sustained by surf shops, schools, and annual competitions that keep the spirit alive. Surf City Miyazaki, a renovated Taisho-era building repurposed as an outdoor fitness club with vintage furniture lounges and sea-view workspaces, functions as a third place for community gathering, offering all-inclusive surf and SUP experiences including lesson, board and wetsuit rental, and shower access, allowing complete beginners to try surfing empty-handed for around 6,600 yen per person. Instructor Watanabe Keishi and others are praised for patient instruction that gets first-timers standing on boards within an hour, with remarks like the water is clear and it feels like becoming one with the wave capturing the allure. The beach entries vary from twenty meters to five hundred meters of paddling depending on tide, with a consistent point break about five hundred meters from the bridge connecting Aoshima and Kisaki, and even in fall with water temperatures of seventeen to eighteen degrees Celsius crowded but rewarding sessions are reported. Accessibility by car is easy, affordable accommodations cluster nearby for young travelers, and the area's recent development includes the four hundred tsubo wood-fired Italian restaurant Allegro Aoshima opening April 15, 2026, in a renovated kominka directly in front of Aoshima Station, promoting train-based tourism where visitors can enjoy craft beer and wine from lunch without worrying about driving, proposing a model where natural coastal living and restaurant business coexist sustainably, with local authorities supporting healthy work-life balance. Through these elements Miyazaki's surf culture remains a beacon for surfers seeking exceptional waves and a welcoming atmosphere for years to come.
