About this place

Blue Cave in Maeda Cape Onna Village is a semi-submerged limestone cave formed by sea erosion of Ryukyu limestone. Entrance under seawater, sunlight reflecting white sand bottom dyes interior mysterious blue, giving name. Selected as one of 25 new tourist spots by Ryukyu Shimpo in 1963, designated Ryukyu Government Park in 1966 and Okinawa Coast Quasi-National Park upon reversion 1972 as Okinawa Prefectural Natural Monument. Transparency averages 20-30 meters, inhabited by tropical fish schools and Ryukyu Kikasan coral colonies. As mecca for snorkeling and introductory diving, about 300,000 visitors enter annually with up to 2,000 per day at peak. About one hour by car from Naha, five minutes walk from Maeda Cape parking. Sea conditions restrict cave entry, advance reservation recommended. Nearby Maeda Beach offers beach entry lessons. Guides emphasize no-touch coral etiquette due to conservation. Additional geological and historical contexts enrich experience. Conservation committees of prefecture and residents cooperate to maintain landscape quality while balancing tourism pressures. Visitors appreciate seasonal transformations, accessibility from Naha or Kagoshima downtown, and safety measures including English multilingual guidance. Local cuisine pairings enhance cultural immersion. Additional geological and historical contexts enrich experience.
