Omijima Island off Senzaki Port, Nagato City, Yamaguchi, 40 km circumference, 16 km of north coast with cliffs, sea caves and odd rocks called Maritime Alps. Formed 9 million years ago by volcanic activity and eroded by rough Japan Sea waves, cliffs 50-100 m high, 128 sea caves, rock forms like Daibutsu, Elephant, 16 Rakan. Highlights accessible only by sightseeing boat: Hensho no Hana, Butsu-iwa, Takachiho. Island hosts 1.9 km Omijima Nature Trail, Whale Tomb and Whale Museum remembering whaling base history, camellia colonies. Designated National Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument in 1927, 100th anniversary in 2026, core of Kita-Nagato Kaigan Quasi-National Park. Senzaki sightseeing boat tour about 90 minutes adult 2800 yen, island connected to mainland by Omishima Ohashi bridge driveable, swimming beach, campsite, diving spots. Bath at Yuyawan Onsen after. The cliffs show columnar jointing of andesite, evidence of underwater eruption, and migratory birds like peregrine falcon nest on ledges, while sea water transparency reaches 20 m visibility ideal for snorkeling.
