About this place

Yabakei spanning Nakatsu City Yabakei Town over Yamakuni River basin is a national scenic spot designated one of Japan's New Three Great Views and Japan Heritage, where fantastical lava plateau eroded into pinnacles and cliffs creates Japan's largest karst-like scenery formed ~56 million years ago by volcanic activity. Six zones: Ao-no-Domon, Kyoshuho, Fukaya Yabakei, Ura Yabakei, Oku Yabakei each different face. Autumn foliage with around 10,000 maples turning red-yellow especially famous, contrasting with hand-dug tunnel Ao-no-Domon of 342m length dug 30 years by monk Zenkai in Edo period to allow pilgrims and horses safe passage risking life. Yabakei Bridge, Rakan-ji Temple and limestone caves exist, central to Yaba-Hita-Hikosan Quasi National Park attracting hikers year-round. Light-up events for Momiji in November and spring fresh greens create seasonal pleasures.
