About this place

Shuri Castle and the gusuku network represent 450 years of Ryukyu Kingdom politics, diplomacy, and syncretic culture from the late 14th century to 1879. Built on a hill overlooking Naha Port, Shuri became the royal capital after Sho Hashi unified the three principalities in 1429. Architecture mixes Chinese, Japanese, and Southeast Asian elements: red tiles, dragon pillars, karahafu gables, and limestone walls employing Ryukyu limestone. The castle's layout follows feng shui with Ryutan Pond below. It was destroyed in 1945 when the Japanese Army's headquarters there was bombarded by US forces. After the war the site housed the University of the Ryukyus. In 1986 a cabinet decision designated it as part of the National Okinawa Memorial Park, and by 1992 the main hall and surrounding gates were reconstructed and opened to the public. In 2000 only the stone walls and underlying ruins, not the reconstructed halls, were inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu. On October 31 2019 a fire destroyed six structures including the Seiden main hall, shocking the nation. Reconstruction is underway with a target for Seiden completion in autumn 2026, and visitors can currently watch craftsmen lacquering pillars in a limited viewing area. Access is 15 minutes walk from Shurijo Station on Yui Rail. Enter via Shureimon Gate of the 2,000 yen note fame, then pass Kankai-mon, Zuisen-mon, Rokokumon to reach the central court. Combine with Tamaudun royal mausoleum, Shikinaen garden, and island gusuku like Katsuren, Nakagusuku, and Nakijin to understand the tri-mountain rivalry and maritime trade. Night illuminations in winter and the Shuri Castle Festival's classical procession in November offer special atmospheres. Wear comfortable shoes for the hill and allow 90 minutes inside. Tickets are about 400 yen for the main area, and audio guides in English, Chinese, and Korean are available. Beyond Shuri, Nakagusuku's curved walls show master mason technique without mortar, and Katsuren offers dramatic ocean views where Amawari's downfall unfolded. Bus 1, 2, or day pass connects sites. Preservation work uses traditional lime plaster and wooden joinery researched from old photos. Local volunteers guide free tours weekends. Sunrise over Pacific from Shuri's hill is quiet before gates open, photographers arrive early. The 2000 yen note featuring Shureimon remains collectible. Night events often require reservation. Combine with nearby Shikinaen villa's seasonal plum blossoms.
