Tidal Flat Experience at Kashima Roadside Station (Michi-no-Eki Kashima) offers a hands-on mudflat adventure on the Ariake Sea, Japan's largest tidal flat area, accessible via Michi-no-Eki Kashima. The station comprises Hori-gata? Actually facilities: panorama view Gatalympic hall? The roadside station complex houses a produce market Senja-ichi (Thousand Vegetables Market) featuring Ariake nori, seasonal fruits, local processed goods at reasonable farm-direct pricing, oyster grill house, and the Kashima Higata Observatory with large glass wall, binoculars and telescopes and counter seating for birdwatching. From April to October the mudflat experience operates on reservation, inviting families to wear provided clothes, slip into Ariake mud, walk, crawl, mud sled and encounter creatures such as mudskipper (mutsugoro), warasubo fish, fiddler crabs, using changing rooms and warm showers. It is the venue for the eccentric Kashima Gatalympics, a sporting contest in mud, doubling as environmental education.
