An Illustrated Japan / Saga / Life & Daily
Yobuko Morning Market in Yobuko, Karatsu City, is counted among Japan's most famous morning markets, often described as one of Japan's four major asaichi markets alongside Wajima, Katsuura and Miyagawa, renowned for local exchange and fresh seafood handling. Its roots trace to Taishō-era store streets where peddlers from islands settled under eaves, expanding as Yobuko Port grew into a larger fishing harbor. With no formal association, vendors chose spots by early arrival, prompting administrational problems; in 1998 road use permits became mandatory and a Morning Market Cooperative was founded in 1999 within the Yobuko Chamber of Commerce, partially administered by NPO SCRUM Yobuko. Peak membership was 170 in 2000, since declining due to aging and lack of successors, yet the market operates daily (closed only Jan 1) on the 200 m-long Asaichi-dori from early morning until around noon, with shop owners moving to their physical stores in the afternoon. Originally a daily life oriented market for island residents, it has transformed into a tourism-oriented market since the area's designation as part of Genkai Quasi-National Park and squid brand promotion. Visitors enjoy squid sun-dried rows, live squid sashimi, seasonal vegetables and citrus, strolling and bargaining, a style favoring communication that retains the communal atmosphere of a fishing port breakfast.
