An Illustrated Japan / Tokushima / Culture & Tradition
Awa Jurobe Yashiki is the preserved residence and open-air museum of Bando Jurobe, 1646-1698, and a dedicated puppet theater in Kawauchi-cho, Tokushima City, selected among Tokushima's 88 scenic spots and Awa historical culture road. Jurobe was a Tokushima domain retainer who monitored rice imports from Higo. Because Higo and Awa bales differed, boatmen could pocket the difference, which Jurobe banned. To avoid the shogunate learning of illicit imports, domain officials executed Jurobe without clear charge in 1698. His family grave is at Hoshoji nearby. The story was dramatized by Chikamatsu Hanji as ningyo joruri play Keisei Awa.
