About this place

Awa Washi is the Japanese paper of the Yoshino River basin, said to have begun about 1300 years ago when the Inbe clan serving the imperial court planted hemp and kozo and made cloth and paper. In its peak Meiji period there were about 500 papermills. Qualities are thin yet strong, tear-resistant, water-resistant and centuries durable, used for shoji screens, printmaking, calligraphy and contemporary art. Designated a National Traditional Craft in December 1976. The central facility is Awagami Factory, Awa Washi Traditional Industry Hall, in Yamakawa-cho, Yoshinogawa City, 15 minutes from JR Awa-Yamakawa station, founded 1989 to.
