About this place
Amaharashi Coast stretches under the Noto Hanto Quasi-National Park designation on Toyama Bay between Takaoka and Himi Cities, Toyama, selected for Japan's Top 100 Beaches and Top 100 White Sand Pine coasts. Its unique selling point is simultaneous view of sea and 3,000-meter Tateyama Range across Toyama Bay, one of few places where snow-capped alps rise above sea horizon within 50 kilometers. Classical poet Otomo no Yakamochi praised it in Man'yoshu, writing Ama harashi saki. Offshore limestone Onnaiwa (Woman Rock) carries legend of Minamoto no Yoshitsune sheltering from rain during his exile to Oshu. The Himi Line train window frames the coast famously. At Michi-no-Eki Amaharashi, a 3-minute walk to beach, footbaths overlook the bay. In winter, phenomena called ke-arashi (steam fog) lifts when cold air hits warm sea, making Tateyama appear to float.
