About this place

Kurobe Gorge, carved by the 85-kilometer Kurobe River with average flow 12.18 cubic meters per second descending from 2,900-meter source to Sea of Japan in just 85 km, gradient one of Japan's steepest, forming Japan's deepest V-shaped gorge up to 1,500 meters depth. Designated national special natural monument and scenic spot, its emerald-green water owes to abundant glacial rock flour. The Kurobe Gorge Railway narrow-gauge trolley runs 20.1 km from Unazuki Onsen (224m) to Keyakidaira (599m) in 80 minutes, passing 41 tunnels and 21 bridges including 34-m Atobiki Bridge. Along line, Kuronagi Onsen and Kanetsuri Bent-bath open hotspring are reachable only by train. Operations cease December-April due to avalanche. The gorge hosts rare flora like Toyama spruce.
