An Illustrated Japan / Niigata / Famous Views
Fukushimagata is a lowland lagoon at minus 0.7 meters altitude with surface 2.62 square kilometers located in Kita-ku, Niigata City within the Echigo Plain, remnant of ancient Agano and Shinano floodplains. Despite urban proximity, it hosts 220-plus wild bird species year-round, including wintering tundra swans, greater white-fronted goose and the nationally protected bean goose (Oo-hishikui) commemorated with a monument, making it one of Japan's premier birdwatching sites. Over 450 aquatic plant species grow, including lotus and water chestnut, and spring sees vast rapeseed fields painting yellow against distant snow-capped Iide mountains, a classic Niigata postcard. Designated prefectural natural park, the View Fukushimagata nature center features observation towers and exhibitions on lagoon ecology, water management, and rice paddy heritage. Walking trails about 5 kilometers circle the water. Early morning mist in autumn creates a mysterious atmosphere.
