About this place

Imori-ike is a pond roughly 500 meters in circumference situated at about 750 meters altitude in Ikenotaira Onsen, Myoko Kogen, Niigata, formed as a barrier lake after Myoko volcanic activity. Its name comes from abundance of Japanese fire-bellied newts (imori) once inhabiting shallows. On calm, windless mornings it offers inverted reflection of Mt. Myoko (2,454 m), called Sakasa Myoko, greatly prized by photographers especially at sunrise when alpenglow turns the peak pink. Surrounding wetlands bloom with mizubasho (skunk cabbage) late April-May, kinka, and iris June-July, creating a flower corridor. The hot spring source at Ikenotaira bubbles at 72 C, simple sulfur type, piping to ryokan clustered around the pond. In winter the area converts to Myoko Ikenotaira Ski Area, pond submerged under snow. Wooden boardwalks facilitate walking without damaging marsh. Vending machines and restrooms are near parking, managed by Myoko City. Visitors enjoy seasonal changes, local food specialties, and easy access via public transport or rental car.
