About this place

Naena Falls, locally called Jishin Taki (Earthquake Fall), straddles the border of Myoko City, Niigata and Shinano Town, Nagano on the Seki River. The 55-meter plunge is among Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. Its name derives from Myoko dialect nae nae meaning muddy or turbid, referring to spring turbidity. Geologically, basaltic columnar jointing creates a vertical wall. An earthquake in 1751 diverted the Seki River, enlarging the falls. Access involves a 15-minute steep descent from parking, with a 600-meter trail and viewing deck, but is closed December to mid-April due to deep snow and ice risk. Spring snowmelt maximizes flow March-May, while autumn maple frames the basin. Nearby Imori Pond offers a calmer contrast within 10 minutes' drive. Local shops serve sansai tempura. The thunder heard from the observation point can be felt as vibration on high-water days. Visitors enjoy seasonal changes, local food specialties, and easy access via public transport or rental car.
