An Illustrated Japan / Niigata / Famous Views
Sasagawa Nagare, also called Sasagawa Flow, is an 11-kilometer coastline from Hama-Shimbo (Toroge-yama) to Samukawa (Kitsunezaki) in Murakami City, Niigata, designated National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument in 1927 (Showa 2). It ranks among Japan's Top 100 Coasts and Top 100 White Sand and beaches. The sea's transparency ranks among Japan's highest, measured over 10 meters on calm days, because the coastline faces the open Sea of Japan without large river inflow. Continuous wave erosion sculpted sandstone and rhyolite into arches like Megane-iwa (Eyeglasses Rock), caves, sea stacks, and sheer cliffs. The sightseeing boat, operating since 1952, runs a 40-minute cruise threading between rocks, offering feeding of black-tailed gulls that follow the boat. Onshore, National Route 345 runs parallel, allowing a coastal drive where blue sea and white rocks contrast. Roadside Station Sasagawa Nagare sells smoked local fish and handmade salt. Sunset viewing from the drive is considered one of Niigata's most romantic moments. Visitors enjoy seasonal changes, local food specialties, and easy access via public transport or rental car.
