Kokusai-dori International Avenue is Naha's 1.6 km main street, nicknamed Miracle Mile symbolizing Okinawa's postwar recovery from zero. After 1945 Battle of Okinawa destroyed 90 percent of Naha, residents in camps returned starting 1945 October potters pioneer. Black market grew 1947 around Kainan to Matsuo. By 1950s prefectural road from Kenchomae north exit to Asato was paved, Naha Kokusai Theatre cinema was built aiming to transmit international culture, lending name. Former center Shuri ceded to this commercial spine. Today over 200 shops line both sides: souvenir Okashi Goten, Ryukyu glass workshops, kariyushi wear specialists, Steak House 88 founded 1955 as American style, Okinawa soba shops, minyo izakaya, apparel. Three big Naha festivals use street closure: Giant Tug of War October, 10,000 Eisa dancers August final Sunday, Shuri Castle Festival November, plus Illumination winter. Daily sound of sanshin live from shops permeates from 10 am to 22 pm. Day dominated by school trip students, evening by local students and office commuters mingling. Side streets Heiwa-dori, Ichiba Hon-dori, Mutsubashi-dori called Suuji-gwaa small alleys lead to senbero-yokocho and Sakurazaka social district, showing day-night dual faces. Three Yui Rail stations within three minutes: Kenchomae, Miebashi, Makishi, 15 minutes from airport. Souvenir tips include Bingata tapestry, shima-zori flip-flops, Orion T-shirt.
