About this place

Gokayama Gassho-zukuri Village in Nanto City, Toyama comprises Ainokura and Suganuma settlements among 40-odd that together with Shirakawa-go were inscribed UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1995 under criteria iv and v with reference 734. The gassho (prayer hands) roof pitch of 60 degrees sheds heavy snow exceeding 3 meters. Ainokura has 20 preserved houses, Suganuma 9, many still inhabited, plus temples and granaries. Roofs originally thatched with miscanthus and secured with wooden pins, not nails, replaced every 20-30 years via yui cooperative communal labor requiring 100-200 villagers tossing materials uphill. Interiors showcase silkworm attics and irori hearths. The area retains sustainable satoyama land use, protected by buffer forest. Night illumination limited to preserve lifestyle. The Gokayama Folklore Museum and Gokayama Washi papermaking workshops lie nearby. Visitors enjoy seasonal changes, local food specialties, and easy access via public transport or rental car. Please respect private lands and carry out trash. The site remains a living cultural landscape, its beauty sustained by ongoing community stewardship.
