Shomyo Falls

Shomyo Falls

Also written: 称名滝 · 肖米奥瀑布

Japan's highest waterfall with a drop of 350 meters. In the snowmelt season the phantom Hanno-ki Waterfall may appear, and the roar echoes powerfully through the V-shaped valley.

About this place

Shomyo Falls with 350-meter total drop is currently recognized as Japan's tallest perennial waterfall, located in Tateyama Town, Toyama within Chubu Sangaku National Park, designated National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. It falls in four stages: 70m, 58m, 96m, 126m from top, plunging into a 60-meter diameter, 6-meter deep plunge pool. Source is Midagahara plateau snowmelt via Shomyo and Tateyama rivers. During heavy snowmelt late April to July, the intermittent Hannoki Falls appears to its right with 497-meter drop, briefly becoming Japan's tallest but not perennial, and occasionally Somen Falls further right creates triple cascade, a rare double record. The approach trail is 30 minutes from Shomyo-daira parking, 2 km of stairs and slopes. Tateyama toll road closes December-April, blocking access. The roar reverberates in a steep V valley whose walls host rare alpine flora. Visitors enjoy seasonal changes, local food specialties, and easy access via public transport or rental car.
