Buttsuji Temple in Kosaka-cho, Mihara City, Hiroshima, is head temple of Rinzai Sect Buttsuji-ha established in 1397 (Oei 4) by Lord Kobayakawa Haruhira inviting Zen master Daitsu Zenji (Guchu Shuei). One of biggest Zen training monasteries in Chugoku, with many sub-temples. The approach road winds about 1 km along a rocky valley with giant boulders and old cedars, turning into a maple tunnel in autumn, illuminating in November. Peak fall foliage early to mid November attracts tens of thousands. Hon-do, Jizo-do, Gankoro are important heritage. Admission 500 yen adult, opening 9:00-16:30 extended in fall, zazen meditation and shakyo sutra copying possible, shukubo lodging available. Access: 40 minutes 630 yen bus from JR Mihara Station, or 30 minutes 370 yen from Hongo Station, by car 20 minutes from Mihara-Kui IC on Sanyo Expressway, parking 300 yen. Combine with nearby Mitani Sansho-en botanical garden. The temple name Buttsu means Buddha communication, founded after divine light guided the monk, and daily morning zazen at 6 AM is open to public, offering authentic monastic experience rarely available to tourists. Vegetarian shojin cuisine served at lodging. The area is well maintained with parking and toilets. Local cuisine and seasonal events enrich visit. Photography recommended early morning or sunset.
