About this place

Senkoji Park spreads across 100,000 sqm from mid-slope to summit of Mt. Senkoji (144.2 m) in Onomichi City, Hiroshima. Famous as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots with about 1500 cherry trees including Somei-Yoshino and Higan-zakura, it also offers spectacular views over the Onomichi Channel, the shipyards and the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. The summit observatory PEAK, renewed in March 2022, is designed by architect Klein Dytham architecture, with a distinctive spiral deck and cafe. At night in spring 384 paper lanterns illuminate yozakura. The park itself is free and open 24 hours, but the Senkoji Ropeway connecting the base to the top runs 9:00 to 17:15 every 15 minutes, adult one-way 500 yen, round trip 700 yen. The 49-meters-long Bungaku no Komichi literary path, statues of poets, and Senkoji Temple (founded 806) lie along the trail. Legend tells of the Tama-no-iwa jewel rock and drums heard from oddly shaped boulders. From Onomichi Station 25 minutes walk or 3 minutes ropeway, parking limited, combine with temple walk and Onomichi ramen. Spring festival in early April draws 200,000 visitors. The park was historically called Mt. Taiho and was a shugendo training ground, and today it is a central sightseeing hub with free entry and famous hydrangeas in early summer adding color beyond cherry season, making it a year-round destination for nature lovers and photographers seeking panoramic Seto Inland Sea views. Evening cafe at PEAK offers coffee with view, cats roam town. The area is well maintained with parking and toilets. Local cuisine and seasonal events enrich visit. Photography recommended early morning or sunset. Check tide tables and weather forecasts for best experience. Family friendly and accessible for most visitors with moderate walking. The site offers superb views and cultural heritage, making it a must-see destination in Chugoku region for nature lovers.
