An Illustrated Japan / Hiroshima / Famous Views
Mount Haigamine, 737 m high independent peak south of Kure City, Hiroshima, is considered one of the top three night views in Chugoku-Shikoku with Mt. Hinoyama in Yamaguchi and Mt. Washuzan in Okayama, selected among Japan's Top 100 Night Views. Formerly Imperial Navy anti-aircraft battery site, its concrete foundations have been reused as observation deck offering 360-degree view of Kure city, Seto Inland Sea, Etajima, Hiroshima city and Shikoku in distance on clear days. On summit sits large white weather radar dome 6.7 m diameter. Legend says harbor lights form character 'Kure' when seen at night, popular for couples. Parking at summit only about 6 spaces, narrow winding road 10 km from Kure Station, 30 minutes drive, motorbike caution due to sharp curves, no toilet or vending, flashlight recommended. Open free 24h, night unlit, day good for paragliding launching, azalea in May. Bring warm clothes, wind strong. Combine with Yamato Museum in Kure. The mountain is called independent peak due to geological uplift separate from Chugoku Mountains, used historically as signal beacon, and rare flora like wild orchids bloom in spring along trail. Military ruins still visible as concrete bases, interpretive board explains history, and daytime hiking trail from Sanjo trailhead popular. The area is well maintained with parking and toilets. Local cuisine and seasonal events enrich visit. Photography recommended early morning or sunset. Check tide tables and weather forecasts for best experience. Family friendly and accessible for most visitors with moderate walking. The site offers superb views and cultural heritage, making it a must-see destination in Chugoku region for nature lovers.
