An Illustrated Japan / Hiroshima / Famous Views
Hitsukageyama is a 311 m high mountain in Mihara City, Hiroshima, famed as one of Seto Inland Sea's three best viewpoints together with Okayama's Washuzan. Its summit observatory overlooks 150 islands of Geiyo Archipelago, Mihara, Onomichi, Imabari and Shimanami Kaido. The mountain's signature phenomenon is the 'sea of fog' Umigiri that appears from early November to early January when strong radiative cooling meets warmer sea temperature, covering the sea with cloud while islands float like in the sky. Best seen just after sunrise, within an hour, when temperature below 5°C, low wind and high humidity, observed from Hitsukageyama and neighboring Ryuoyama. The summit is reachable by car via narrow mountain road, parking for about 20 cars, 5 minutes walk to observatory with toilet and azumaya. In spring about 2000 cherry trees color the slopes; in summer paragliders launch. Access: 10 min drive from Sunami Station on Kure Line, combined with Okunoshima bunny island from Tadanoumi Port. Sunrise photography popular, dress warm, tripod allowed. Free, open 24h. The mountain is also called Hitsukageyama because ink brush shape shadows cast on sea, legend related to calligraphy, and pairs with nearby Fudekage park area for cherry tunnel drive in April. Fog forecast check at Mihara city site helpful, windless morning success rate higher, bring thermos. The area is well maintained with parking and toilets. Local cuisine and seasonal events enrich visit. Photography recommended early morning or sunset. Check tide tables and weather forecasts for best experience. Family friendly and accessible for most visitors with moderate walking. The site offers superb views and cultural heritage, making it a must-see destination in Chugoku region for nature lovers.
