Sandankyo Gorge lies on Shibaki River, tributary of Ota River, 16 km long (11 km from Tarutoko Dam to Shibaki plus tributaries) in Akiota Town and Hiroshima City's Saeki-ku. Designated National Special Scenic Beauty in 1953, selected among Japan's 100 Landscapes, 100 Forests for Forest Bathing, 100 Autumn Foliage Spots, and the only three-star in Hiroshima in Michelin Green Guide Japan (Guide Bleu 2014). It is flagship of Nishi-Chugoku Mountains Quasi-National Park. Geology of 100-million-year-old Hiroshima granite and Takada rhyolite forms steep V-valley. Famous spots: Kurofuchi (200 m long, 30 m wide emerald pool), Sarutobi (rapid where monkeys could leap, 30 m wide rock), Nidan-taki, Sandan-taki, Mitsu-taki falls. Water cruise boat operates near Kurofuchi. Trail from Naga-fuchi Gate to Mizu-nashi Gate is pedestrian only, no vehicles, free entry, no fixed opening hours but snow closes in winter. Access from Nishi-Hiroshima Station by bus 60 minutes to Sandankyo entrance, parking 500 yen. Spring fresh green May, autumn colors early November peak. Walking shoes required, 5 km course 3 hours. Water is so clear you can see ancient riverbed, and rare salamander Oda salamander inhabits, while forest contains 300-year-old trees. Yeti legend local, moss covered rocks picturesque. The area is well maintained with parking and toilets. Local cuisine and seasonal events enrich visit. Photography recommended early morning or sunset.
