Nakadake at 1,506 meters is the only active center of Aso's five peaks, with seven craters aligned north-south, of which Crater 1 is currently accessible for observation. Its rim is 4km circumference, 600m diameter, 130m depth, reachable by paved road even in heels according to local saying, but access strictly controlled by real-time volcanic gas concentration monitoring. When gases clear, you see an emerald green acidic hot lake at 50-60°C at the bottom, with vigorous white fumaroles and sulfur stench embodying Earth's breathing. Dynamic crater walls and rising plume offer unforgettable raw volcanic encounter. Safety: official Aso Volcano Observatory website must be checked; if closed, alternative observatories provide distant grandeur. Recently temporary full closure followed a helicopter accident, reopening cautiously. Combined with Kusasenrigahama, Aso Sanjo Plaza and Daikanbo it forms the standard Aso caldera circuit.
