Sen Tanada in Ubuyama Village, Aso District, at 820m plateau, is a fan-shaped terraced rice paddy system selected as one of Japan's 100 Terraces, Connected Terraced Heritage, Important Cultural Landscape and World Agricultural Heritage. Opened over 250 years ago reclaiming eroded mountain valley, it shrank from 59 paddies in 1962 to 16 paddies today maintained by three farming families. On clear days you view three of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains: Aso, Kuju, Sobo. The water mirror season during transplanting, when paddies filled, reflects sky, cattle, sunrise and starry skies so beautifully it's called too beautiful and a photographer's pilgrimage. Irrigation taps Yamabuki Spring—sub-branch of Ikeyama Spring delivering 30 tons/min via 1.8km channel, 70% earthen ditch hosting fireflies and aquatic life sustainably. Rice won Good Rice-Making 100 Selection 1990. Winter snow blanket, spring grassland after no-yaki burning, and surrounding pasture with grazing cattle create Japan's original rural panorama preserved by sustainability spirit.
