Senyu Gorge is a valley at ~900m on northern foot of Aso-Takadake and Nakadake said to be so beautiful even hermits get drunk, famed as Miyama-Kirishima azalea colony. About 50,000 Miyama-Kirishima shrubs blanket the mountainside, turning vivid pink carpet in mid-May. From parking observatory you look down over Aso Valley and outer rim; walking trail leads you into flower fields. High peak Takadake at 1,592m near summit holds about 30,000 more plants peaking around early June before rainy season, requiring ~2 hour hike—Aso's finale of azalea season. Rare chance to see under clear blue sky due to rainy season overlap. Previously ropeway operated to Takadake, now suspended since 2010 but information center remains as base for hiking to Takadake and Nakadake. Simple spa Senyu Gorge Onsen at foot allows washing off tiredness after flower viewing. Spring pink is unforgettable.
