Kikuchi Gorge at Hara, Kikuchi City, lies on northwestern Aso outer rim 500-800m elevation as a 1,193-hectare natural recreation forest, special protection zone of Aso-Kuju National Park. It claims four crown titles: Japan's 100 Famous Waters (Kikuchi Suigen), 100 Forest Bathing Woods, 100 Water Source Forests and 100 Waterfalls (Yonjusanman Falls). Broad-leaved primeval forests of fir, hemlock, zelkova cloak the gorge, maintaining cool 'natural air conditioner' air even midsummer with water temperature ~14°C daily outflow 100,000 tons. Scenic spots include Kake-maku Falls, Reimei Falls, Ryuga-fuchi, Tengu Falls, Yonjusanman Falls 15m x 25m, Hirogawara etc. Spring fresh green April-May, summer negative ions, autumn foliage late Oct-mid Nov especially brilliant. Two trails: Iyashi course ~1km 30min and Minus Ion Enjoy ~2km 60min, with occasional slippery stones so non-slip shoes recommended. Early summer dawn light shafts piercing trees reflect on pools, favorite of photographers.
