Akiyoshidai in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, altitude about 300 m, is Japan's largest karst plateau, 16 km east-west 10 km north-south, formed 350 million years ago as coral reef turned into limestone, displaced 80 million years ago to present location by plate movement, uplifted and eroded into white limestone pinnacles scattered over grassland. Designated Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park 1955, Special Natural Monument 1964, and on April 23 2025 as UNESCO Global Geopark Mine-Akiyoshidai, the first karst landform in Japan among 11 geoparks in Japan. Underground hosts over 400 limestone caves including Akiyoshi-do. Traditional February yamayaki burns 1138 ha grassland maintaining landscape. Origin of Akiyoshi name from ancient Empress era. About 40 minutes by bus from Shin-Yamaguchi Station. The plateau hosts rare plants like Miyama Kirishima, insects like karst grasshopper, and archaeological Jomon sites caves, plus viewpoint cafes offering karst soft serve. Limestone used for cement but conservation balanced. The area is well maintained with parking and toilets. Local cuisine and seasonal events enrich visit.
