Akiyoshido Cave, 100 to 200 m underground of Akiyoshidai, is one of Japan's biggest limestone caves, total length 10,300 m ranking third in Japan including exploration connections to Kuzu-ga-ana Cave, tourist route about 1 km, entrance height 20 m width 8 m, widest chamber 200 m with 30 m ceiling, temperature constant 17°C year round. Designated Special Natural Monument 1952 and Quasi-National Park 1955. In 1909 local youth Unehara Fumijiro and English geographer Edward Gauntlett explored to innermost, renamed from Taki-ana to Akiyoshi-do in 1926 after Crown Prince's visit. Highlights: Hyakumai-sara hundred calcite rim pools, Koganebashira giant column 15 m high 4 m diameter, Kurage no Takinobori jellyfish ascending fall. Entrance fee adult 1400 yen, open 8:30-17:30 last entry 30 minutes before, elevator at Kurotani and Akiyoshido entrances, wheelchair accessible first 300 m. About 50 minutes by bus from Mine Station, parking free. The cave walls show traces of paleo sea level, bats and blind shrimp live inside, and LED lighting system installed 2020 highlights mineral colors while conserving ecosystem. Cave formed over 300,000 years, drips still growing stalactites. The area is well maintained with parking and toilets. Local cuisine and seasonal events enrich visit.
