Tsunoshima Ohashi Bridge, 1780 m long, connects mainland Hohoku-cho, Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture with Tsunoshima Island, opened November 3 2000. At the time among the longest toll-free bridges to a detached island in Japan, maximum pier height 30 m, prefectural road 276. View of white girders contrast with cobalt to emerald sea at Amagase Strait is famous, used in car commercials and TV drama HERO. Tsunoshima Island 3.93 km2 basalt plateau population about 700, with Tsunoshima Lighthouse first lit 1876, made entirely of granite, among Japan's 50 top lighthouses. Free parking 47 cars island side, 30 mainland side, viewpoint toilet. Summer crowded for swimming and fishing, wind over 10 m/s caution for two-wheelers. Within Kita-Nagato Kaigan Quasi-National Park, cycling road paved. About 70 minutes from Shimonoseki IC on Chugoku Expressway. The bridge was designed to preserve scenery by reducing pier height, avoiding center island, and curves gently to avoid blocking waves, and best photograph spot is mainland side hill showing straight alignment over turquoise water recognized by Instagram crowds. Bridge lighting no, drive slowly for view, dolphins occasionally spotted. The area is well maintained with parking and toilets. Local cuisine and seasonal events enrich visit.
