Senjojiki in Heki-naka, Nagato City, Yamaguchi, is a 26,400 sqm grass plateau at 333 m altitude on the neck of Mukatsuku Peninsula stretching into Japan Sea. Name means ground large enough for 1000 tatami mats. Panoramic view includes Sea of Japan, Hagi six islands, Mishima, wind turbines 13 units. Sunset ranked among best 100 sunsets in Japan, average temperature 3-4°C lower than lowland in summer, good for cooling. Hilltop has Senjojiki Cafe and observation deck, toilets, free parking about 50 cars. Spring rape blossoms yellow carpet, summer MTB endurance race Asa-ase Festa gathers nationwide. Access: 10 minutes by car from JR Nagato-Furuichi Station on Sanin Main Line, strong wind caution, winter occasional snow, no camping allowed, picnics okay. Kitanagato Coast Quasi-National Park. Stars bright, popular for astronomy. Cafe serves local milk soft cream, view decks made of reused wind turbine blades, and area formerly used for horse pasture explaining treeless grassland maintained by wind. Insects like hawk moth populate. The area is well maintained with parking and toilets. Local cuisine and seasonal events enrich visit. Photography recommended early morning or sunset.
