Kasayama in Koshigahama, Hagi City, Yamaguchi, altitude 112 m, is regarded as Japan's lowest active volcano. Part of Abu Volcanic Group about 40 monogenetic volcanoes, designated active volcano 2003 by Japan Meteorological Agency, composed of basaltic andesite, lava plateau formed 11,400 years ago, scoria cone and lava flow 8,800 years ago latest eruption, crater diameter 30 m depth 30 m walkable via trail. Summit observatory Tobinosu offers view of Sea of Japan, Hagi islands, Abu volcanoes. In 2023 cafe and exhibition room reopened April 29. Foot of mountain has many wind caves where cool wind about 10°C blows even in summer as natural cooler, Myojin-ike brackish pond natural monument, Korai Tachibana native mandarin natural monument. About 25,000 wild camellia trees Yamabubaki famous, February-March Tsubaki Festival lively. Free parking, about 20 minutes by car from Higashi-Hagi Station. The volcano is monogenetic meaning it erupts only once per vent, and soil analysis indicates future neighboring vents possible, monitored by tiltmeter network, making it valuable educational field for volcanology students. Myojinike pond connects to sea underground via lava tube, seven-colored water. The area is well maintained with parking and toilets. Local cuisine and seasonal events enrich visit.
