Hakusan Shirakawa-go White Road, formerly Hakusan Super Rindo Forest Road, is a 33.3-kilometer toll scenic mountain drive linking Ishikawa Prefecture's Hakusan City Ozou (Chugu toll gate) and Gifu Prefecture's Shirakawa Village Hagi? actually Magari toll gate near Hatodani, crossing the northern flank of sacred Mt. Hakusan (2,702m) through Hakusan National Park Special Zone, the only vehicular connection between Ishikawa and Gifu across Hakusan. Opened August 25, 1977 (public August 26) after 10-year construction starting November 1967 by Forest Development Corporation as Forest Development Special Route, cost over 10 billion yen. Total paved length Ishikawa side 18.6 km, Gifu side 14.7 km; paid interval 24.5 km between gates (200-meter free at ends). Altitude runs 600-1,450 meters with switchbacks and large回り込み to gain height around Mt. Sanpo-iwa, using Sambo-iwa Tunnel at summit border. Along road seven waterfalls cascade including Fukube no Otaki 86m drop at 900m elevation, Ubagataki 76m at 770m, Shiritaka etc. Snake Valley Jadan? deep V gorge follows. Beech primeval tree sea and alpine plants excel. For safety no motorcycles allowed, width narrow, time zone system climate. Open early June to late June? Actually early July to November 10, but varies due snow; entry 07:00-18:00 summer.
