About this place

Higashi Chaya District in Higashiyama-higashi, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa spans about 1.8 hectares, 130 meters north-south, 180 meters east-west, containing 140 buildings of which two-thirds preserve traditional Japanese wooden townhouse form with delicate lattice kimushiko? called kigrid. It is Kanazawa's largest geisha district among three - Higashi, Nishi, Kazuemachi - established in 1820 (Bunsei 3) under permission of 12th Kaga lord Maeda Narinaga as public entertainment area concentrating chaya houses to control nightlife. Ochaya is not tea shop but entertainment house where geisha perform. Preserved by municipal ordinance as Important Preservation District of Historic Buildings. Notable houses open to public include Shima (1820) and Kaikaro which maintain original party rooms with red lacquer and gold screens. Evening gas lamp lighting creates retro ambience; many shops transformed to cafes offering gold-leaf soft ice cream, Kutani porcelain, and kimono rentals. Geisha performances still occur nightly for private parties; daytime visitors can watch rehearsals at Higashi Chaya Kaikan. Visitors enjoy seasonal changes, local food specialties, and easy access via public transport or rental car. Please respect private lands and carry out trash. The site remains a living cultural landscape, its beauty sustained by ongoing community stewardship.
