Marugame Castle is one of Japan’s twelve surviving original castle keeps and features the tallest stone walls in the country. Visitors are captivated by the castle’s elegant grounds and the sweeping views of the Seto Inland Sea from the keep.

About this place

Marugame Castle on Kameyama Hill is one of twelve surviving original keeps, Important Cultural Property and Top 100 Castle. Started 1597 and rebuilt 1660, its keep is only 14.5m tall second smallest yet four-tiered stone walls rise 60m tallest in Japan with elegant fan curve repelling foes. Honmaru well 65m deepest. Walls combine nozurazumi and uchikomihagi. Southwest collapsed 2018 and under restoration. From keep view Mt. Iino called Sanuki Fuji, Seto Inland Sea and Seto Ohashi. Spring 300 cherry trees whiten walls with lights, compact town castle easy to climb.
