An Illustrated Japan / Kagawa / Townscape & Scenery
Chichibugahama Beach in Nio Town, Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture, is a one kilometer long beach on the Shonai Peninsula famed as Japan's Uyuni Salt Flats for mirror photography. At low tide far shallows expose vast tidal pools up to ankle deep that, when wind ceases during evening calm known as Seto Yuunagi when sea breeze and mountain breeze collide and cancel, become perfectly still mirrors reflecting sunset gradients from orange to purple to navy and human silhouettes perfectly. For decades beach was choked with drifting garbage from Seto Inland currents and western wind that accumulated debris and even faced industrial reclamation plan for factory inducement, nearly erasing beach. From February 4 1996 seven local volunteers including 85-year-old childhood friends Kenji Shiota former town office worker and Isoo Suga contractor formed Chichibu no Kai and began daily cleanups despite cold community eyes, gradually expanding to over 300 members three generations later. In February 2016 local company worker and camera hobbyist Ayako Nagai visited to find Kagawa pride beyond udon, crouched low at water's edge and captured full-body reflection of friend walking in tidal pool, resembling Bolivia's salt flat, a photo that won only honorable mention locally. Posted by Mitoyo Tourism Exchange Bureau director Murasaki Ishii in April 2017 after research mapping tide, wind and sunset angles over month, image went viral globally, boosting annual visitors from 5,500 to 500,000, earning top ranking in US Time Out list of most Instagrammed beaches in Japan 2021 and two consecutive years number one in Japanese travel magazine satisfaction. Bureau now publishes 365-day mirror forecast calendar based on tide levels, wind speed and sunset research, allowing photographers to plan. Volunteer hospitality photographers, former teachers and fishermen, guide low-angle shooting using smartphone, telling visitors to wear boots. Best mirror conditions occur within 30 minutes of sunset on calm days, requiring checking tide tables and arriving one hour early, while daytime remains family beach with shallow swimming. To catch mirror surely requires three overlapping conditions: low tide, sunset, and calm wind, confirmed by checking Mitoyo City tourism website tide table, wind forecast, and real-time Instagram story updates from locals on day. Tide level 0 to 30 centimeters produces widest pools, sunset gradient most vivid 30 minutes around sunset is richest in orange purple spectrum, and wind speed below 2 meters per second ideal for mirror formation. Parking includes two lots with washing foot basins and changing rooms, while beach cafes sell Chichibugahama sunset-themed drinks including salt latte and shio soft ice cream sprinkled with local salt. Drone photography is prohibited without permit to protect visitors. After sunset beach chairs appear for night stargazing.
