Yamanashi Prefecture covers about 4,465.27 sq km and about 770,000 inhabitants (about 785,000 in May 2025 estimates) with Kofu as capital. It lies in Koshinetsu part of Chubu, surrounded by Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama to east, Nagano northwest, Shizuoka southwest, one of eight landlocked prefectures in Japan. Habitable area ranks 45th because mountains occupy 80 percent, forest 75 percent. Geography classic basin-and-range: Kofu Basin center encircled by Mt. Fuji 3,776 m south, Akaishi Range Southern Alps including Mt. Kitadake 3,193 m second highest in Japan west, Yatsugatake peaks north, Okuchichibu Mountains east. Rivers Fuefuki, Kamanashi, Fuji River, lakes Fuji Five Lakes. History corresponds to Kai Province, home of Sengoku lord Takeda Shingen Furinkazan. In 1871 Haihan-chiken domain reorganized as Kofu Prefecture renamed Yamanashi after Yamanashi County where Kofu lies, though official reason choosing county name over Kai unclear possibly to avoid duplication with Kaizu. Climate Central Highland type with strong regional variation: basin summers hot with high diurnal range often exceeding 10 C, winters relatively sunny due surrounding ranges blocking cold air, early snowmelt delay similar to Kanto, annual precipitation low around 1,100 mm sunshine over 2,100 hours. Northern highlands Kiyosato exceed 1,000 m subarctic Dfb, Mt. Fuji summit tundra ET with permanent snow patches. Industry leads in fruit: peaches, grapes, plums rank top nationally with output over 40,000 tons, wine production using Koshu grapes first in Japan with about 40 wineries in Katsunuma, alongside jewelry and crystal polishing in Kofu accounting for 30 percent domestic jewelry, and tourism around Mt. Fuji UNESCO World Heritage since 2013 attracting climbers. Chuo Shinkansen maglev experimental track runs 42.8 km in prefecture. Additional magnets are Shosenkyo Gorge selected as one of Japan's most beautiful valleys with granite pillars, Takeda Shrine built on Takeda residence, Shingen-ko Festival in April featuring 1,000 samurai parades listed in Guinness World Record, Kiyosato Highland Seisen-ryo, Moegi no Mura, Fuji-Q Highland amusement park with roller coasters near Mt. Fuji, and hot spring. Tourism and industry coexist with deep cultural traditions preserved for centuries offering visitors nature, history, and cuisine year-round.
