Onidake, 315m, is the symbol of Fukue Island, Goto, a perfect scoria cone among 11 monogenetic basalt volcanoes whose last eruption was just 18,000 years ago. Despite the fierce name meaning demon mountain, its shape is gentle, entirely grass-covered, maintained by controlled burns every three years preventing tree growth, leaving a deep crater on top. Listed among Japan's 100 Power Spots, it is deeply loved by islanders. From the parking lot stairs lead easily to an observatory with binoculars and a roofed picnic area surrounded by lawn. The summit offers a 360-degree view of Goto City, Fukue Port, Fukue Airport, Goto Nada and over 100 Goto Islands. Constant wind makes it perfect for kite flying, with an annual kite festival. On its southern slope Onidake Observatory houses a 60cm Newtonian reflector telescope offering same-day reservation Milky Way observation, making it a renowned star-gazing sanctuary.
