About this place

At the westernmost tip of Fukue Island in the Goto Islands, Osezaki Cliffs are 150-meter sea cliffs carved by brutal East China Sea waves, topped by a stark white lighthouse. First lit in 1879 (Meiji 12), it is one of Japan's 50 Lighthouses with one of the nation's longest beam ranges, still actively guiding ships. Designated access: from the Route 50 turnoff, a single road leads to two observation decks 200m before the lighthouse; a further 1.2km walk down 20-30 minutes brings you close to the cliffs where roaring surf echoes powerfully. Known as the place where Japan's last sunset disappears (excluding Okinawa), the sea turns orange at dusk. The site featured in the movie Akunin (Villain). Around September-October rare Shimashajin violet flowers bloom and migrating Oriental honey buzzards soar. No vending machines or toilets on the trail, so bring water and sturdy shoes for a rewarding adventure.
