Unzen, at the center of Shimabara Peninsula, is the first national park designated in Japan (1934) and its heart is Unzen Jigoku (Hell). Around 30 fumaroles emit sulfur smell and dense white steam: Oshichijigoku, Daikyokan Jigoku, Oito Jigoku and others bubble at 98°C covering the terrain. The springs are strongly acidic sulfur and alum springs with antibacterial effects. The area was historically a Christian martyrdom site during feudal persecution. Unzen Onsen below developed as an international summer resort in Meiji era, with three sources: Furuyu, Shinyu, Ko-Jigoku drawn to inns. You can taste onsen tamago and yusenpei baked with geothermal steam. Hoshino Resorts KAI Unzen opened November 2022 right in front of hells. Ropeway to Nita Pass shows autumn leaves and spring Miyama-Kirishima azaleas. The hell walk boardwalk lets you feel earth's energy with warning signs and catholic history entwined.
